Urban Partnerhip Bank is joining with the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation to present “Putting Your Financial House in Order, ” on April 24th a free identity theft prevention program during Money Smart Week Chicago, April 20-27.
Chicago Public Schools Board is arbitrarily clarifying Clara Barton Elementary School for Turnaround status. Usually the Turnaround process takes place after a school has been formally placed on probation and has a record of “no progress” in the deficit areas that placed the school on probation. In the case of Clara Barton, they were not placed in this category nor were they ever on the Turnaround list.
In a move aimed at countering Chicago’s crisis in K-8 truancy and absenteeism, state Sen. Kimberly Lightford has introduced legislation to lower Illinois’ compulsory school age from 7 to 5.

About Year Up
Year Up is an intensive, one year training program for 18-24 year olds that focuses on computer and professional skills. It’s free, and students can earn up to 18 college credits. Students are paid a weekly stipend of up to $153 during the first six months and up to $225 per week during the second six months of the program.
The year is divided into two parts—the classroom phase and the internship phase. During the classroom phase students take classes onsite in Information Technology. This includes learning about computer software and hardware, becoming familiar with the internal components of a computer and the common software programs used in a corporate setting. Students also take classes in Business Communications and Professional Skills learning skills like meeting leadership, appropriate corporate email, and networking introductions.
During the internship phase, students are placed in internships at corporations like Google, Bank of America, and Chase. Ongoing evaluation occurs throughout the Corporate Internship, so that students can complete the Year Up program poised for success in the corporate world.
A strong Year Up applicant will:
– Be motivated and have a positive attitude
– Have an interest in technology
– Be able to handle a college level class (community college English 100 or 101)
– Be able to commute downtown every day and commit to the entire year of the program
– Be able to meet high expectations regarding punctuality, attendance, completing assignments
