Asadah Kirkland Presents Inaugural “Soulful Chicago Book Fair” July 16!

The Soulful Chicago Book Fair promises to be a gathering of the griots. The fair, founded by Asadah Kirkland, will present a counter-narrative to Chicago’s violent reputation that’s perpetuated by the media, and it’ll do so in Woodlawn, a neighborhood known for high crime. is on Saturday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., on 61st Street, between Cottage Grove and King Drive.

Auburn Gresham Digital Youth Network Sends Condolences for “Brother Mike” Hawkins

Chicago poet, activist, mentor, and multimedia educator Mike Hawkins, better known as Brother Mike, has died at age 38, according to several sources close to Hawkins. Brother Mike’s services are Wednesday December 10th 11am-2pm Second Baptist Church, 1717 Benson Ave Evanston, IL. Celebration of Life, December 21st, 2-8pm Little Black Pearl, 1060 E. 47th.

Southwest Neighborhood Youth Writers and Oral History Project is a news reporting program for current and recently graduated high school students.  This inaugural program started as a six-week summer Art Options program, designed for youth to document the oral histories of three Southwest side communities.
